Last Of The Big Spenders

October 9, 2008 No Comments

Accusations, law suits, court room battles, dragged through the press, media soundbites and relationship breakdowns, that’s what happens when someone accuses me of being the last of the big spenders… I had to ask what he meant but we got there in the end. For some reason, some people in the world feel there is a financial crisis occurring, is it only me that’s missed it?

I learned a long time ago that if you state something enough times and get others to say the same then most people will believe it. It’s true that the stock markets, the financial equivalent of betting on the horses, is going through a change, if you bet on horses expect to lose, I have no sympathy for those people whatsoever, I used to gamble thousands a month, I don’t anymore, I learned that lesson years ago.

So the whole world gambles on the horses and moans when they fail to enter the race or collapse half way through, boo hoo, what’s that go to do with me? Well in short a few things, because these silly buggers wrapped up mystery presents of debt and sent them half way round the world, my house has supposedly lost £15k in a year, I can’t get a mortgage or release the cash and due to lack of funds, businesses will collapse, jobs will be lost and the communists are gaining strength globally thanks to nanny state inteference.

Again, what’s that all go to do with me? Apparantly I’m the last of the big spenders because my income has changed very little, yes I noticed end users are a little sparce but domains are still selling at a rate adequate for requirements, I won’t lie to you though, sales could be better but at the moment domains seem to be pretty resilient, if houses have lost 15% then you could maybe expect a similar drop in domains but they always were worth what the buyer is willing to pay and what the seller is willing to accept.

And don’t be fooled with claims of “go on, credit crisis aint it” They got money, haggle and get the price up.

Since July I’ve wined and dined, done a few concerts, gigs, cinema, restaurants, got new teeth for £1600, clubbing, been to Bulgaria for a week, Mamaia for a long weekend and last week Campulung for five days, shelled out for a Birthday because she’s adorable, beautiful and extra special to me and I may well go away for a week again in November and if sales hold up, another short weekend after that. I pay me mortgage, it’s tight but I’m doing it, I’m paying my rent, I’m behind but current sales will cover it. I’ve always lived like this.

In fact with all the activites and holidays and places I am visiting, I am still managing to keep my head above the water whilst doing more than ever before with a girl mate I very much enjoy my time with. Why am I telling you this? Business may shed staff, the state may take over banks and secure savings, they may even nationalise a few companies but ministers should ensure it returns to private ownership, not all of them are commies and Labour are on the way out anyway.

I have bills to pay and I have to keep selling assets, no change there, I should be saving this I know but if we all wait for this so called depression or recession or slump to affect our lives for too long, we’ll be sitting in the cold for ten years doing nothing, what good does that do for anybody? I’m 31, I don’t want to be 41 wondering where another ten years have gone. So I pursue a lifestyle that I can accommodate, I continue to grab sales when and where I can and get out once in a while and enjoy this wonderful world with wonderful people.

I finalised the sale of worc.co.uk and birthdaynewspapers.co.uk today and may be about to get rid of designhub.co.uk before the week is out and it would be nice to get a few more under the belt before the weekend kicks off. Domain sales are currently steady, good domains are still selling, there’s 30 million possibly domain buyers in the uk with at the very least £300 million to spend between them, what financial crisis are we talking about?

The one where banks mucked up and put the economy in trouble or the one where people still have jobs, still buy clothes and food to live, businesses still do their forecasts and buy assets and pay their staff, a world where the sun still rises and sets and people like me still sell domains, good domains to those who need them. Slow growth does not mean people stop spending, no growth and a contraction does not mean people stop spending, invest in assets for your business for the future and the present.

Domaining won’t escape a slump, it’s not, you just have to be canny. Business should know the following, one domain can be worth several staff, one domain can save you employing several staff, one domain can make you more profit through instant recognition than any marketing team, it’s how you utilise your purchasing power and marketing that makes your investments sound. Selling isn’t easy right now but when finding the right end user they are buying because they too know it’s right to buy when offered the chance.

I’m not the last of the big spenders, I am trying to balance my life and happiness in the midst of continuing gloom in the rags day in day out and offset my bills and outgoings with sales and other income - the world does go on. If you’re a business and wish to let an offer of a domain pass you by, that’s your call however don’t expect the domain to be there when you decide the world is better off financially, now is the time to reap from other’s misery, to gain on your competitors. I know people whose business has increased ten fold in the current climate, maybe, just maybe a domain name can help you do the same.
